A Few Social Media Tips to Disregard

Join every social network that you can find.

If you try to remain active on every social network, you probably won’t have time for your actual work load. It’s a good idea to research the audience on each site. By doing so, you will be able to identify the interest of each group. If the users aren’t interested in what you have to offer, staying on that site would be a waste of your time. If you are new to the social media game, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook are a good jumping off point for your research.

Social media is SEO.

Social media helps bring more people to your site but it does not replace SEO. The last thing you want is to miss out on traffic to your website because you decided to rely on social media to get your business name out to the public.

Do less work…automate all of your updates.

Social media is about making a personal connection with other people. Don’t send canned responses. Potential clients recognize canned messages pretty quickly. With a canned response, you are telling your potential customers that you don’t care about them or your job. You need to have genuine conversations with your target audience.

Just use a Direct Message to your new followers.

This takes us back to canned responses. Let’s reiterate what I said earlier…Don’t send canned responses! No matter how well they are worded, dm’s come across and impersonal and/or spam. The last thing you want to do is get dinged on your rankings in the search engines by appearing to be a spammer.

You don’t need social media. Your prospects aren’t using it.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Almost 70% of adults use social media. You can’t possibly think that none of your potential clients will fall into that majority. Check out the targeting platforms used for advertising on social media sites to see how many people fall into your desired market.

If you make a mistake, you can delete the post to fix the problem.
When you post a comment, it’s there to stay. Even if you delete it from your social media account, others have seen it and probably taken a screen shot to send to all of their friends. Consider your words carefully before you type them. Before you press “send”, read the text another time (or two) to ensure that you have said exactly what you intended and in the way you meant for it to be perceived.
